The Rt Hon The Lord True CBE PC
Lord Nicholas True is a British Conservative life peer and senior statesman. Created a Life Peer in 2011, he currently serves as Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, having previously held senior government positions including Leader of the House of Lords and Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal (2022–24), and Minister of State at the Cabinet Office (2020–22).
Earlier in his career, Lord True was a senior adviser in Downing Street, serving as Deputy Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit and speechwriter to Sir John Major. He was highly regarded for shaping policy and communication at the highest levels of government. Alongside his national roles, he has a long record of service in local government, leading Richmond Council from 2010 to 2017 and helping shape community policy and regeneration.
His philanthropic and civic contributions include trusteeships with the Sir Harold Hood Charitable Trust, which supports a broad range of causes, and the Richmond Civic Trust, where he has worked to preserve heritage and civic life. He also previously supported the Olga Havel Foundation, advancing human rights and civil society initiatives.
Lord True plays an active role internationally as well, serving as Honorary Co-Chairman of the Italian Conservative Party. His career reflects a balance of national leadership, local service, and charitable commitment, underpinned by a deep loyalty to Conservative values and institutions.
